DESCRIPTION:Attendees will learn about upcoming plans the KLC has for growing literacy in our community to strengthen adult literacy throughout Kalamazoo County. The event will also feature awards for: \nLiteracy Advocate of the Year\nVon Washington\, Jr. \nJune Miller Legacy Award in Literacy\nPhyllis Chenery \nPlease join us in celebrating the wonderful contributions that this year’s awardees have made to improve literacy services for adult learners! \nSince 1974\, the KLC has been the leading voice for the cause of adult literacy\, mobilizing and training volunteer tutors to teach struggling adult readers throughout the county.  This event allows the community to welcome the new leadership of the organization and give thanks for the tremendous service of our wonderful board members. The KLC will present its Officers and Board of Directors for 2017-2018 as well as its Annual Report for 2016. Volunteers\, supporters\, and friends of the KLC are welcome to attend. \nImagine a community where everyone can read… By coming together\, Kalamazoo can be that community because everyone needs to read!

SUMMARY:Kalamazoo SCRABBLE® Fest
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 8th Annual Kalamazoo SCRABBLE® Fest! This event raises awareness of adult literacy as well as help raise funds to strengthen and expand adult literacy services for adults who struggle to read. Last year\, more than 100 players attended the event\, raising over $13\,000 to support the KLC. Bell’s Brewery is returning as our presenting sponsor for the 2018 festivities\, with your additional assistance this will be the best Scrabble Fest yet! \nThe Kalamazoo SCRABBLE® Fest is open to players age 16 and up. Players can register in the “Competitive” or the “Just for Fun” category. Additionally\, organizations can sponsor 4-player Corporate Teams. All levels of players are welcome. The event will follow official SCRABBLE® rules and tournament play will consist of three 45-minute games with each player having 3 minutes per turn. \nThe cost to play is $25 per person or $200 per Corporate Team. Registration is currently available until March 23\, 2018. Register online or visit the KLC office at Goodwill Industries of Southwestern Michigan. The Kalamazoo SCRABBLE® Fest is limited to 120 players. Game slots are expected to go fast so be sure to register early! Players who register by the March 23\, 2018 deadline will receive an event t-shirt. \nThe KLC is also seeking volunteers to serve as judges\, timers\, and to help with the set-up and clean-up. SUMMARY:Research & Training Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Adult Literacy Research and Training Symposium is for all interested individuals to attend. This event will provide attendees with an increased understanding of key adult literacy issues and current best practices in four major areas: \n\nParent Literacy\nWorkplace Literacy\nHealth Literacy\nEnglish as a Second Language\n\nThe symposium will also cover how to create vibrant learning opportunities in Community Literacy Centers. \nSee the 2017 Adult Literacy Research and Training Symposium Guide for a description of the symposium sessions. \nThis event is for anyone who is interested in supporting adult literacy – from experienced volunteer tutors and instructors to individuals who want to learn more about how they can serve this important cause. The symposium will give attendees the opportunity to learn new techniques and strategies to support adult learners\, employ lessons learned\, and receive ongoing support as they join the growing faculty of tutors\, instructors\, and supporters who are making an impact on adult learning in the region. \nDr. Edward Roth\, Associate Professor of School of Music\, Music Therapy Fellow for the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapists\, and Co-Founder and Director of the Brain Research and Interdisciplinary Neurosciences Lab will be featured as the keynote speaker at the symposium. Admission is free. \nThe Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC) is hosting this event in collaboration with WMU Business Connection\, Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations\, Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine\, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
