DESCRIPTION:Join the Kalamazoo Literacy Council and the Kalamazoo Public Library as we proudly welcome Oliver James to Kalamazoo\, on Thursday\, April 18! Oliver is a motivational speaker\, father\, and  adult learner who began teaching himself to read as an adult. He chronicled his literacy journey on social media and has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers and supporters. Oliver has received plenty of media attention as well\, including People Magazine\, Good Morning America\, and NPR\, and he is the recipient of the Barbara Bush National Literacy Honor Award from the Barbara Bush Foundation. Despite all the public accolades\, Oliver says his journey is just getting started and that he’s determined to do everything he can do keep motivating millions of adults just like him to reach their goals. \nThis is a free community wide event. DESCRIPTION:The Right to Literacy – a local collaborative dedicated to achieving a fully literate community that works together to empower all individuals to achieve their full potential – invites you to a free screening of the documentary “The Right to Read” on Wednesday March 8 from 5:30 – 7:30 at the Kalamazoo Public Library in the Van Deusen Room. \nThe Right to Read shares the stories of an activist\, a teacher\, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long sucess: the ability to read. Oakland\, CA’s Kareen Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for better reading instruction. “What good is winning the right to vote if we can’t even read the ballot?” he says. DESCRIPTION:New training opportunity! Presented in conjunction with our Right to Literacy partners at SLD Read\, this dynamic 6-hour session is designed to offer usable tools and techniques that support reading\, writing\, and spelling instruction and intervention services. The training is broken down into three components: Phonological Awareness\, Spelling Rules\, and Red Words. \n\nPhonological Awareness: Includes a short assessment and activities for learning. Areas of focus are Pre-Skill activities (directionality; same and different; first and last; beginning\, middle and end)\, rhyming\, 2 and 3 syllable words and initial sounds.\nSpelling Rules: There are 5 spelling rules featured; each rule also includes activities (words to read\, phrases and sentences to read\, formatted writing page and decodable text). DESCRIPTION:It’s time for Kalamazoo Scrabble Fest! Each year\, players come together for a fun-filled day of gaming to support adult literacy. This year’s event is Saturday\, April 6\, 12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the downtown Radisson. We are excited to welcome back players in the Just for Fun\, Competitive\, Teams\, and Online divisions. 100% of Scrabble Fest proceeds support the free programs and services of the KLC\, for adults who struggle to read. \nRegistration Fees:\nIn-person tickets are $25 per player ($30 at the door). A 4-person team registration is $200. Fees include hors d’oeuvres\, tshirt\, and gaming materials. Cash bar will be open. Online tickets are $5 for up to 3 submissions or $25 for unlimited submissions. \nPrizes:\nTrophies will be awarded for 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place in the Just for Fun\, Competitive\, and Teams divisions.
