Oakland\, CA’s Kareen Weaver believes literacy is one of the greatest civil rights issues of our time and is fighting for better reading instruction. “What good is winning the right to vote if we can’t even read the ballot?” he says. Presented in conjunction with our Right to Literacy partners at SLD Read\, this dynamic 6-hour session is designed to offer usable tools and techniques that support reading\, writing\, and spelling instruction and intervention services. The training is broken down into three components: Phonological Awareness\, Spelling Rules\, and Red Words. \n\nPhonological Awareness: Includes a short assessment and activities for learning. Areas of focus are Pre-Skill activities (directionality; same and different; first and last; beginning\, middle and end)\, rhyming\, 2 and 3 syllable words and initial sounds.\nSpelling Rules: There are 5 spelling rules featured; each rule also includes activities (words to read\, phrases and sentences to read\, formatted writing page and decodable text). This year’s event is Saturday\, April 6\, 12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the downtown Radisson. We are excited to welcome back players in the Just for Fun\, Competitive\, Teams\, and Online divisions. 100% of Scrabble Fest proceeds support the free programs and services of the KLC\, for adults who struggle to read. \nRegistration Fees:\nIn-person tickets are $25 per player ($30 at the door). A 4-person team registration is $200. Fees include hors d’oeuvres\, tshirt\, and gaming materials. Cash bar will be open. Online tickets are $5 for up to 3 submissions or $25 for unlimited submissions. \nPrizes:\nTrophies will be awarded for 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd place in the Just for Fun\, Competitive\, and Teams divisions. DESCRIPTION:Support Your Community and Have Fun Doing It!\nThis event will raise awareness of adult literacy as well as help raise funds to strengthen and expand adult literacy services for adults who struggle to read. Last year\, more than 100 players attended the event\, raising over $13\,000 to support the KLC. We hope to have an even greater event this year. \n\nOpen to players age 16 and up.\nCan register in the “Competitive” or the “Just for Fun” category\nOrganizations can sponsor 4-player Corporate Teams\n\nAll levels of players are welcome. The event will follow official SCRABBLE® rules and tournament play will consist of three 45-minute games with each player having 3 minutes per turn. The symposium will give attendees the opportunity to learn new techniques and strategies to support adult learners\, employ lessons learned\, and receive ongoing support as they join the growing faculty of tutors\, instructors\, and supporters who are making an impact on adult learning in the region. \n  \nThe Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC) is hosting this event in collaboration with WMU Business Connection\, Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations\, Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine\, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
