SUMMARY:ESL Tutor Forum
DESCRIPTION:English as a Second Language (ESL) is an important part of the adult learning continuum. Immigrants and refugees in our communities are eager to learn language and literacy skills that help them function at work\, school\, and community settings. Increasingly\, volunteer tutors are providing instruction for ESL learners. \nThis forum will provide teaching strategies for tutors and instructors who provide literacy instruction for non-native English speakers.

SUMMARY:Research & Training Symposium
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Adult Literacy Research and Training Symposium is for all interested individuals to attend. This event will provide attendees with an increased understanding of key adult literacy issues and current best practices in four major areas: \n\nParent Literacy\nWorkplace Literacy\nHealth Literacy\nEnglish as a Second Language\n\nThe symposium will also cover how to create vibrant learning opportunities in Community Literacy Centers. \nSee the 2017 Adult Literacy Research and Training Symposium Guide for a description of the symposium sessions. \nThis event is for anyone who is interested in supporting adult literacy – from experienced volunteer tutors and instructors to individuals who want to learn more about how they can serve this important cause. The symposium will give attendees the opportunity to learn new techniques and strategies to support adult learners\, employ lessons learned\, and receive ongoing support as they join the growing faculty of tutors\, instructors\, and supporters who are making an impact on adult learning in the region. \nDr. Edward Roth\, Associate Professor of School of Music\, Music Therapy Fellow for the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapists\, and Co-Founder and Director of the Brain Research and Interdisciplinary Neurosciences Lab will be featured as the keynote speaker at the symposium. Admission is free. \nThe Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC) is hosting this event in collaboration with WMU Business Connection\, Lewis Walker Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnic Relations\, Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine\, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. PLATO’s online courses are a major focal point of the ExpressWays 2 Success program. Instruction is geared to support Basic Literacy\, GED preparation\, workplace literacy\, and college preparation. Seating is limited to 12 people.
