Adult literacy research and training symposium

Friday, December 13, 2019 | 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. | WMU Fetzer Center | FREE to the public

Literacy is the ability to read, write, compute, and use technology at a level that empowers an individual to reach his or her full potential as a parent, employee, and community member.

Welcome to the 2019 Adult Literacy Research and Training Symposium!

This event is for anyone who is interested in supporting adult literacy – from experienced volunteer tutors and instructors to individuals who want to learn more about how they can serve this important cause.

During this FREE day-long symposium, attendees will participate in workshops and presentations that explore best practices for adult literacy instruction, across five focus areas: Parent Literacy, Health Literacy, Workplace Literacy, ESL Instruction and Learning Disabilities and Learning Differences. This university-community partnership enhances the growing faculty of tutors, instructors, and supporters who are advancing the status of adult literacy in the region. You will learn strategies that help learners thrive in the workplace, manage their health, and become “first teachers” of their children. Attendees will also hear ways to better serve English as a Second Language learners and how to create vibrant learning opportunities in Community Literacy Centers (CLCs).

Keynote Speaker

This year features an opening presentation by Rob Shindler, author of Hot Dogs and Hamburgers: Unlocking Life’s Potential by Inspiring Literacy at Any Age. This heartwarming – and often hilarious – story tells of Rob’s very personal journey from struggling to help his son with learning differences to becoming an incredible national champion of adult literacy. He will also lead an afternoon session to share his unconventional yet extremely effective tutoring techniques.

Rob’s enthusiasm is truly captivating – you don’t want to miss this!

In addition to five sessions, we have three 1:20 minute tracks to choose from. When registering, please select which track(s) you’re interested in. We hope to see you for an exciting day of learning, sharing, networking, and fun.
