Kalamazoo, Michigan – The Kalamazoo Literacy Council (KLC), in collaboration with Western Michigan University (WMU), announces the 2025 Adult Literacy Research & Training Symposium, happening on Friday, October 10, from 8:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at WMU’s College of Education & Human Development. This year’s theme is “Closing the Literacy Opportunity Gap,” and sessions will highlight strategies and programs that aim to eliminate barriers in adult learning in innovative ways.
Each year, the symposium attracts literacy advocates like volunteers, tutors, educators, and anyone who believes in the transformative power of education. Through engaging presentations and skills-building workshops, attendees will get insights and learn tips for effectively teaching adults. They will also hear inspiring stories of resilience in the adult learning journey. The symposium offers a unique opportunity to make new connections and gain deeper knowledge. Session descriptions can be found here.
KLC Executive Director Michael Evans says, “We are dedicated to advancing literacy initiatives that empower our communities. Individuals gather here to share practices and strategies that foster a culture of learning, which ultimately strengthens our society.”
Lisa Garcia, WMU Assistant Vice President for External Partnerships adds, “The symposium is a powerful example of what happens when research and community practice come together. By working alongside the Kalamazoo Literacy Council, WMU is helping equip literacy advocates with the tools and knowledge to remove barriers and expand opportunities for adult learners.”
The symposium is a free event. In person attendance is encouraged, but there is a virtual option. Refreshments and a boxed lunch are provided. Professional Development hours (SCECHs) may be earned for attending sessions. Click here to register by October 2nd.
